We recently sat down with Kashun YU, Electrical Buyer at SPL Installations, to learn more about his role, his experience in procurement, and what drives him in his day-to-day work. In our conversation, he shared insights into his approach, challenges, and what he enjoys most about being part of the SPL team.
Can you tell us a bit about your day-to-day as an Electrical Buyer at SPL Installations?
“As a buyer, my role starts with understanding the team’s requirements, what materials or services they need and why. Once that’s clear, I reach out to suppliers to source the best options, ensuring that what we procure meets our standards for quality, cost, and delivery.”
What’s been your biggest challenge so far in this role?
“When I first joined SPL, there wasn’t a fully developed procurement process in place. One of my main challenges and achievements, has been to guide the team in shaping a more structured, efficient system for purchasing and supplier management. It’s been rewarding to see those improvements make a real difference.”
What do you enjoy most about your role here?
“Definitely the communication side of the job. I really enjoy speaking with different people, understanding how their businesses operate, and finding ways we can work together effectively. It keeps the role interesting and dynamic every day.”
How do you balance cost, quality, and delivery deadlines when sourcing materials?
“As a procurement professional, all three factors — cost, quality, and delivery, hold equal importance. It’s about assessing each supplier individually and identifying the one who offers the right balance and the best overall value for the project. It’s a constant exercise in finding the right fit rather than the cheapest option.”
"Driving meaningful, step-by-step progress in procurement, I focus on building strong partnerships and fostering collaborative teams, all while leveraging technology for faster, smarter growth"
What qualities do you think you bring to the team?
“I bring over 14 years of experience within the supply chain field, which has helped me develop a strong understanding of how to create efficient and effective procurement processes. I also take pride in building strong, trusting relationships both within the SPL team and with our suppliers, to make sure communication is clear and collaboration runs smoothly from start to finish.”
What kind of relationships do you try to build with suppliers, and why?
“Supportive and trustworthy relationships. I believe that’s the foundation of any successful professional partnership. When both sides communicate openly and understand each other’s goals, it leads to better outcomes for everyone involved.”
In your own words, what does procurement mean to you?
“To me, procurement is about connecting the dots across the business. It’s not just buying materials, it’s understanding the needs of different stakeholders and ensuring the solutions we source are the right fit for SPL as a whole. It’s a bridge between operations, finance, and suppliers.”
